How Can We Endure the Temptations and Chaos in The Last Days?

How Can We Endure the Temptations and
Chaos in The Last Days?

Are we living in the last days? Read the newspapers and the news sites on the Web, if that doesn’t tell you we are living in the last days then read the prophecies in the Bible about the way things will be in the last days. We are living in a day of chaos, temptation, blood and horror. Wickedness is pouring down upon all people everywhere. How can we endure the chaos of the signs of the times until our last breath?

The Prophet Isaiah speaks often about the last days before the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Through his prophecy and those of other Old Testament prophecies we get a glimpse of what things will be like during the Last Days.

In Chapter 40 there is a beautiful verse that is often quoted for its imagery and its teaching of hope, it is Isaiah 40:31 which reads:

“But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

I love this passage of scripture as much as the next Christian. I want to talk about what makes this passage so special, and why it gives hope to us living in the Last Days.

Let’s look at verses 28-30 which sets up verse 31 and explains some of the meaning of verse 31.

While there are many in the Last Days that will faint with weariness and have no strength, our Lord, the Creator of all things, will have all strength and will never faint. Our Lord will be the one constant to which we can look to for energy as we start to fail. He will strengthen us when we get weary from the chaos and commotion of the wickedness of the last days.

wings_as_eaglesVerse 28 reminds us that “there is no searching of his understanding.” In other words, he is all-knowing which means he can help us better than any other source to which we may be tempted to look.

“Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? There is no searching of his understanding. He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths will faint and be weary, and the young men will utterly fall.”

Beautiful imagery. This all sounds great but it’s not as simple as those three verses alone may sound. Their meaning is dependant on what it says in verse 31 where it mentions an important phrase: “they that wait upon the Lord.”

“But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:28-31)

For those who wait upon the Lord will be given power in the Last Days so that we may overcome temptations and have power to overcome the great wickedness and chaos of the end of times.

What does the word “wait” mean in this context? There are a few definitions that apply perfectly for this verse. “To be available or in a state of readiness; To eagerly look forward to; To attend upon (especially as a sign of respect); To perform the duties of an attendant or servant for; to call upon.”

Let’s reread verse 31 with some of these definitions in place of the word “wait” to see how it works.

“But they that are in a state of readiness upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

Or,

how_can_we_deal_with_last_days“But they that eagerly look forward upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

Or lastly,

“But they that that attend upon or perform the duties of an attendant upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

If we want the blessings of verse 31, and what Christian wouldn’t? We need to wait upon the Lord rather than go it alone in the perilous events of the last days. Always work on your faith that it fails not when needed the most.

What Is It Like to Be a Guy With Fibromyalgia?

What Is It Like to Be a Guy With Fibromyalgia?

Why is it an issue to be a guy with Fibromyalgia (Fibro) as opposed to a gal with Fibro? It is a well-established fact that the vast majority of Fibro patients are women. Many studies have been done on the topic of gender and Fibromyalgia and they all turn out similar results. Statistically, of all reported cases of Fibro, 90% are women and 10% are men, one study indicated 85% women to 15% men.

What man wants to have a woman’s disease? “I don’t.” But I have it, so now I have to deal with it. What person wants to be sick? No one. When you are, you deal with it.

This hideous, bone crunching chronic pain disease is not for the faint of heart. But when you get it, you often feel faint of heart.

With this disease I suffer debilitating chronic pain throughout my body, sometimes all at once, sometimes just a few parts of my body. Since last Friday, I have had an overwhelming pain in my left knee. I have also had a line of pain that goes horizontally in the small of my back that feels like a fold. Meaning that if I bent over to far I would fall into that fold. It feels a lot like my knee, bone on bone. Throw in neck pain and muscle spasms all over my back. That’s what the last three and a half days have been like.

whats_it_like_guy_fibroBefore we go any farther, to those who don’t know what Fibromyalgia (Fibro for short) is, it’s a pain sensitivity that affects all soft tissue in the body. It does not affect the joints. However the muscles, tendons and ligaments are affected by Fibro which in turns affects the joints indirectly.

Most people associate Fibro with chronic pain. If you do then you’re right but there is more to the story than chronic pain. There are countless web sites that mention all the primary and secondary symptoms of Fibromyalgia. I’ll only mention the ones that bother me the most.

Fibro fog is the name of a small collection of symptoms that affect memory and cognitive functions. You’ve heard of people looking for their glasses only to find that their glasses are on top of their heads. Sometimes their glasses are right on their nose. Everyone has forgotten something important that they never dreamed they would forget.

Have you ever been speaking and in mid sentence forget the word you were going to use? You know what the word means and you can describe what the word means but you can’t think of that word? Have you ever gone into a room to find something and forget what you’re looking for?

All of these memory items and more are what many Fibro-suffers go through many times in one day. What’s worse is going into another room to take a pain pill because you are hurting. You get to the other room feeling that searing pain but you forget what you went in that room for. You go back to where you came from only to realize you needed a pain pill.

Day in and day out, these cognitive issues wear on you heavily. There is also a foggy sensation in your mind that makes you feel like you are not all there.

How many of you have suffered itchy sensations from allergies? How many of you have suffered those same types of skin irritations without any allergies? Welcome to my world.

When I was first diagnosed with Fibro, I thought I was completely fatigued due to all the pain sucking the energy out of me. Pain can do that but so can Fibro. Fibro ebbs and flows. When I am having a relatively good day, I can still feel fatigued because it is just another independent symptom of Fibro.

I could go on for several pages about my pain and symptoms but I have done that already in other posts here in CallahanWriter.com.

Because of Fibromyalgia I am severely limited to what I can and cannot do physically and even mentally with cognitive functions. I can’t support my family which I have done for twenty of the thirty years of marriage and family.

I can’t lift heavy things. I can’t lift light things that are awkward. I have sensitivities to sunlight and UV rays which affects being outside. I wear sunglasses almost everywhere I go. I tire easily so I have to pace myself.

All of these issues and symptoms of Fibro affect my interaction with my family, my Church, my old hobbies and activities. I am a different person in many ways since Fibromyalgia came along.

I have a very kind neighbor who mows my lawn every week all summer long. He and other neighbors shovel the snow on my driveway and side walks. I truly and deeply appreciate my neighbors but I also feel a deep resentment to my health for sidelining me from the physical activities of life I enjoyed so much and took for granted all those years.

I still think almost the same as before, but not completely the same. I have to entertain limitations when I make plans. I have to pace myself on good days so that I don’t overdue it, and have to pay for the fun the next day in agonizing pain.

I’m not looking for sympathy. My health could be worse. I just want people to be aware of how Fibro affects its victims including men. For me, I feel like a bum not being able to provide for my family. I feel like a bum when others have to do for me the things I no longer can do. I am in many respects a different person. I need to reinvent myself and that’s what I am working on at this time of my life. I have to plan a future that allows for countless sick days and chronic insomnia. I have to adjust to a day of unknowns. I can wake up in the morning feeling great and by lunch time I am in writhing pain only to feel better by nap time. These kinds of changes can happen four or five times a day or last all day or not bother me on rare days.

Try planning with those limitations. I’m a stubborn and traditional person and I find it defeating when I don’t feel like a man. Sometimes I feel like a blob on the recliner taking up space. Once in a while I go to bed gratefully for a semi normal day. Yes, it really is that dramatic.

Invictus, The Inspirational Poem For Those Who Suffer

Invictus, The Inspirational Poem For Those Who Suffer

The inspiring and motivational poem “Invictus” written by William Earnest Henley is a poem for the ages. It is so ably applicable to anyone who suffers indignity, injustice, invisible illness or pain.

invictus_memeWhen we are suffering inside from any type of illness that is not obviously apparent we suffer alone and usually in silence. Let this verse inspire you and help you realize that through our God we can have an unconquerable soul that through the grace of God we are indeed the captain of our fate and the captain of our soul. It matters not what others think it only matters that our God blesses us with an unconquerable soul and blesses us with the strength to be the captain of out destiny.

I dedicate this poem to all my fibro friends and all those who suffer Fibromyalgia and other invisible illnesses.

Invictus

By William Ernest Henley

Out of the night that covers me,

Black as the pit from pole to pole,

I thank whatever gods may be

For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance

I have not winced nor cried aloud.

Under the bludgeonings of chance

My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears

Looms but the Horror of the shade,

And yet the menace of the years

Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll,

I am the master of my fate,

I am the captain of my soul.

In spite of the fibro that covers me which is as despairing and black as a pit. I thank my God! For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance, I have winched and I have cried out loud, but I have not given up. My head is bloodied from the circumstance of my illness that I didn’t ask for, but for which I suffer. Beyond this pain and burden are more wrath and ache.

But in spite my suffering through all the years to follow they shall find me unafraid. It matters not the pain or angst or how powerful the fear, because I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.

What speaks to me from this poem are three lines in particular: 1. For my unconquerable soul, 2. I am the master of my fate, and 3. I am the captain of my soul. What part of this poem speaks to you. Is this an encouraging poem to you?

Fibro Community

Fibro Community

In the last eleven years when I was officially diagnosed with Fibromyalgia I have seen internet resources grow at an amazing rate. If you take out all the “snake oil” fibro pages there are still a lot of resources at our disposal online. For a long time I have wondered how I could join in the online Fibro community. I have been a member of one of the greatest FaceBook groups on the subject for a long time, Fibro Family Christian Support Group.

Fibro Awareness

Fibro Awareness

For several reasons which I’ll share on a latter post, I added a Fibromyalgia thread to my Blog CallahanWriter.com. It has been picking up steam the last few weeks. I wondered if it was doing any good. CallahanWriter is in a couple of FaceBook Blog groups. She saw a link to a Fibro Awareness post I had recently posted. She sent me this message:

“Good day Troy. I don’t believe in coincidence and Sooooo glad I found your Blog while checking in on Blog Challenge: For the last 2+ years I’ve struggled with symptoms which doctors could not diagnose as ‘Illness’ or knowing what is wrong. After numerous tests done, all of them told me ‘Nothing’s wrong, except for a little depression maybe, Iron deficiency, Spastic colon (developed 2years ago) – some people told me I’m imagining and faking. So I ‘suffered in silence’ Yesterday took a turn for the worse- I decided to take a magazine and lie down on the couch : and there’s an article describing ALL my symptoms and the Name : Fibromyalgi (hoped I spelled correctly :I’m actually Afrikaans speaking) I googled it and it confirmed all my symptoms, AND opened The FB Blog Challenge and there’s your Blog about it! Coincidence? I believe not. Thanks so much for the blog! I’ll be sure to follow it. Going to make appointment with doctor again and show him the articles. I’ll take it then from there. Have an amazing day.” From Jo-Marie . . . (last name omitted for privacy.)

It was exciting to see my effort actually connect with someone in the terrible world of Fibromylagia. If I can turn my 31 years with Fibro to some good, it may well have been worth it.

Fibro Awareness

Fibromyalgia Awareness

It used to be that many unintelligent doctors called Fibromyalgia a “trash-can diagnosis.” That was very insulting to me and many of my Fibro friends. It now seems most doctors acknowledge Fibromyalgia. Now the issue with Fibromyalgia is to educate people to know that Fibromyalgia is much more than just a chronic pain illness. There are so many more symptoms to Fibro than just chronic bone crushing pain.

It’s not that we want everyone to feel sorry for us. We are still in education mode, trying to educate people about what we suffer. We have what falls into the category of an “invisible disease.”

Just because we look healthy doesn’t mean we are. People with mental health problems look healthy as do people with diabetes, unless they’ve lost a foot or leg.

fibro_awareness_2Just so you know, Fibromyalgia is like having the worst possible muscle aching flu all the time. Others say it is like having arthritis all over the body. Recently I hear a doctor say it’s like having a migraine all over the body.

I have had Fibromyalgia for 31 years I can state with absolute certainty that all of those comparisons are true.

Imagine having an illness with the following symptoms:

Memory loss, skin rashes, skin sensitivity, itchy dry eyes, blurriness, dry mouth, restless legs, IBS, headaches, chemical sensitivity, sun light and UV light sensitivity, insomnia, migraines, impaired concentration, depression, anxiety, impaired coordination, ringing in the ears, dizziness, and assorted neurological symptoms.

That is a long list of symptoms. You would be one sick puppy if you had all or most of those symptoms, agreed?

Like I said earlier, we are not looking for sympathy but education. When someone tells you they have been diagnosed with Fibro, now you know what they have to contend with.

Now for good measure, add chronic, body wide pain to the mix. Welcome to my world and the world of millions of other Fibromyalgia patients. Fibromyalgia affects both men and women, although more women than men are currently diagnosed.

Why Would Anyone Want to Deny Their Savior?

Why Would Anyone Want to Deny Their Savior?

reighn_deny_him If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us. (2 Timothy 2:12)

This verse is speaking to those who know Christ but choose, for whatever reason to deny Him. You can’t deny what you don’t know.

This daily devotional asks this question, why would anyone want to deny their Savior, the one who suffered, bleed and died for us that we might live forever?

What are some ways we could end up denying our Savior? Knowing better, we make poor choices that draw us away from Him. Every choice we make has consequences. If we make an impulsive bad choice when we know better could really hurt our spiritual progression.

Maybe we are lazy and in that laziness fail to follow the teachings of Christ. Perhaps in our pride we think we know enough to make choices without praying for confirmation of that choice.

There are many ways one can deny their Savior but perhaps a positive approach would work best. What are things we can do to cement our relationship with our Redeemer?

Pray always. When we are not in a place to kneel and pray we can always pray in our heart and mind seeking his protection physically or spiritually. Seeking help from Him always. This also keeps us humble knowing that we rely on him.

Strive to keep his commandments and repent when we fall short, relying the saving graces of our Lord and Savior. Let us always work to keep ourselves in His good graces so that we might enjoy His tender mercies.

Wouldn’t It Be Nice To Plan On Being Sick?

Wouldn’t It Be Nice To Plan On Being Sick?

I think you all can relate . . . You’re in bed or on your couch curled up under a warm blanket and every muscle in your body hurts. You’ve got the flu. Hot and cold sweets, a fever that comes and goes. You’re dizzy and you’re so weak you can hardly lift your head off the pillow. The noise from the TV drives you crazy. You toss and turn even though it hurts because you can’t get comfortable. You know that in a few days you will be better but until then you feel like you may die.

The worst thing about this situation is that when you woke up that morning you drank your orange juice and you were anxious to get to work. You had your week planned out and you were feeling great. A few hours later you were hit in the head with a 2″x4″ and you were deathly ill with the flu. Your plans for the week are out the window. Now you are laying in misery wishing you were dead.

I am willing to bet the farm that most of you who have read this have had something like this happens more than once in your life. I am sorry for you and that hideous experience you’ve been through.

I know what that is like and my Fribo friends out theirs know what that’s like. Fibro fighters have this sort of thing happen to them all the time. In several different ways.

Unless you have had Fibromyalgia, it’s hard to fully understand the aches, pains and malaise of fibro. Some say it’s like having the flu throughout your body, day in and day out. Other would say it’s like having arthritis in your muscles. Some say it’s like having a migraine throughout your body.

Fibro, The Unpredictable Disease

Fibro, The Unpredictable Disease

Pain aside, it is the unpredictability that is another hard thing we have to contend with.

You wake up eating a good breakfast, you leave for work feeling on top of the world and within a few hours you’re laying sick in bed with the flu.

Just like the scenario of feeling good in the morning and then by the time the evening news rolls around you’re fully engulfed in your flu bug.

This is one of the predictable things about Fibromyalgia. It is unpredictably good and being predictable.

We can wake up one morning feeling like we go on a nice long walk, ten or twenty minutes, and then before we actually get our walking shoes on we get a migraine or a flare up that feels like a heart attack or a broke hip.

It is often less dramatic. We can cycle through feeling well (well is a relative term) and then an over whelming malaise and back to feeling good, three or four times a day. Does this sound hard to believe? It’s true.

I have had Fibromyalgia for thirty-one years and I am telling it to you straight. No exaggerations.

Fibromyalgia is not the least bit predictable. One minute is good the next minute is bad.

What inspired me to write this piece on the unpredictability of Fibromyalgia, is that two days ago, on Sunday I was walking down the hall, I turned a little putting my back against the wall so my wife could pass. Just as my back rested on the wall I got shot suddenly with a bout of dizziness and weakness. I just stood there in shock. Apparently I looked awful because my wife asked what was wrong. I was shocked at how suddenly my health had turned on me again. No warning.

I stood there for several minutes and then felt barely good enough to get back to my recliner. Less than an hour I was feeling as fine as Fibro allows.

What I m writing sounds like fiction but it is not fiction. It’s a weird and frustrating fact of life with fibro. If you don’t believe me ask someone you know with Fibro.

There is one more thing about this disgusting unpredictable disease. You are a poisoner to your own body. You are getting ready for an evening with friends. It’s been a good day. Then just as you are ready to go out you suddenly feel lousy. Your muscle and joints ache all over. You have to call and cancel plans for the third straight time.

Many people with Fibromyalgia find that after several years with this awful illness their pool of friends is much smaller, if not dried up.

Fibro is an illness of contradictions, unpredictability, pains and it is very real with no end in sight.

What Does It Mean To Believe In Jesus Christ?

What Does It Mean To Believe In Jesus Christ?

I recently came across a kindly man who had converted to Judaism from Catholicism. He asked me the following question, “What does it mean to believe in Jesus? I’ve never found a Christian who could answer this based on the faith Jesus lived — Judaism.”

I am choosing to answer this question on my CallahanWriter Blog. I hope this is interesting to the rest of you. Maybe you might be able to use these thoughts sometime in your own Christian walk.

Jesus was born in the lineage of David which is also the lineage of Judah. This made Him a Jew. I think everyone knows that.

When Jesus performed miracles, He often told the recipient to go and give their offerings to the local priest at the temple. Sometimes he told the newly healed benefactor not to tell anyone about the miracle. At least one did tell of his miraculous recovery which caused The Lord to be inundated with throngs of people.

Sprinkled in His teachings were bits and pieces of the Mosaic law and many of His teachings showed a respect to the Mosaic laws. But He taught a higher law, higher than the basic Mosaic laws.

Sermon On The Mount

What Does It Mean To Believe In Jesus?

What Does It Mean To Believe In Jesus?

Case in point. At the beginning of His ministry Jesus taught one of His great sermons called the “Sermon on The Mount.” He referred to the Mosaic law, and the “Ten Commandments” when he said “Thou shalt not kill.” He went on to teach a higher law that we should not be angry with our fellows and whoever ever is guilty of being angry with his brethren shall be in danger of the judgment.

Similarly, He referred to the commandment of old, “Thou shalt not commit adultery.” He went on to teach a higher law that we should not look on a person and lust after them.

This was His introduction to teaching higher laws than the Mosaic laws, the laws by which Jews followed.

He taught so many higher laws that a few times the Gospel writers mentioned Jesus as saying something to the effect, “I have not come to destroy the law, but have come to fulfil the law.” The fulfilment of the law was offering His sinless soul to pay the infinite price of sin committed by all who have or all who will live on this planet.

He observed the laws of Moses as much as He was able while teaching a higher law. There were times when He and His apostles were accused of some minor infractions of the law such as when they were traveling through a corn field and ate of the corn. He taught about the realities of life with the parable of a man getting his livestock out of a hole on the Sabbath which strict adherence to the Mosaic law would have forbidden.

Higher Law

Jesus did not live the life of a Jew the way the Scribes, Pharisees and Seduces judged the law. He respected the law that He came to fulfil while teaching everyone He could about a New Testament or new and higher law or gospel.

The faith by which Jesus lived was that of Christianity, not Judaism. He respected the law of ordinances and performances of the Mosaic law but believed, lived and taught a higher law, the gospel of Jesus Christ, not the law of Moses by which the laws and doctrines of Judaism are based on.

I love my brethren of the Jewish faith. We have so much in common. Our main point of difference, is, and it’s big one, is our belief in Jesus Christ, The Messiah.

As a Christian I believe in Jesus Christ as my Redeemer and Messiah. I know he was born Jewish and I know He tried all He could to teach a higher way than the laws of Moses. Like all Christians, I believe Jesus Christ to be the Messiah that most of the Jews refused to believe in.

Fibromyalgia is Real – A Poem

Fibromyalgia is Real  – A Poem

Fibromyalgia Is Real

Fibromyalgia Is Real

This is the first fibo-awareness post I have posted from CallahanWriter that I didn’t write. I met Tabatha Schulz on a Fibro group on Facebook Fibro Family Christian Support Group. She agreed to let me post this delightful poem on my blog. Enjoy.

What’s this you say? Fibromyalgia’s not real?
How about you step into my life and just see how real it feels!?
You couldn’t handle it, not even for a day!
This is my life, the pain never goes away. The unending pain, the stiffness is real!
The leg cramps, hands trembling, How does it feel?
My stomach is wrenching, My ears ringing too I’m fatigued and have insomnia… How does that feel to you?

Fibro Poem

Fibro Poem

The IBS has my stomach tied up in knots, and nausea too I wish this would stop!
The pain in my joints is totally insane, Am I even going to be able to walk today?
My skin is on fire, and my muscles burning in pain!
My head hurts and my mind is foggy again.
Dizziness, depression my list could go on… Living with this illness is going to be life long.
So how does it feel to be in my shoes?
Next time be careful the words that you choose… See Fibromyalgia is VERY REAL!
Now you know how our daily life feels.
So be kind and understanding, don’t hurt us with words
We just want understanding and our voices to be heard.
