The Proverbs

The Proverbs

The collection of Proverbs in the Old Testament is what I like to call the place where the “rubber meets the road”. The Proverbs are short sayings that generally give counsel about living righteously. These short sayings can be as small as a one sentence verse to a half a chapter. No Old Testament prophets wrote any of the Proverbs. But many of the Proverbs are considered to be inspired writings. In 1 Kings 4:32 it says that King Solomon “spake three thousand proverbs”. Some of those are included in what we know today as The Proverbs. Some Proverbs are such that no one knows who wrote them. The very last proverb was written by King Lemual.

Proverbs On Wisdom

Proverbs On Wisdom

As you read through all of the Proverbs you will see several recurring themes that the Proverbs speak to like Wisdom, Pride, Friendship, Happiness and Morality. There are additional topics such as trusting in The Lord, raising children, avoiding sin and temptations and the words we speak.

Out of all the themes or topics covered in The Proverbs one major themes seems to override them all and is present through all 31 chapters. That topic is “wisdom”. Wisdom that comes from God. Look at these two passages of scripture found in The Proverbs that tell us about “wisdom”.

Proverbs 1:5,7

5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels. 7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 2:2-6

2 So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; 3 Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; 4 If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; 5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God. 6 For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

If we follow the counsel in the previously mentioned scriptures we can see the wisdom in all the proverbs as well as find wisdom in our lives. As we consider The Proverbs we can see the inspired teachings of The Bible meet real life and get short statements of truth relative to our every day life, where the rubber meets the road.

Postscript

In the context of The Proverbs:

Fear means reverence and respect for God.

Froward means perverse.

Talebearer means gossip.

Faith and Trust

FAITH and TRUST

Some say Faith and Trust mean the same thing in the context of Proverbs 3:5-6. Consider the passage…

proverbs3:5-6

Trust In The Lord Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6)

In order to trust in The Lord you need to have faith in Him first.  How can you trust in a being you have need seen in person without having faith first.  So in this case faith comes before trust.  Once you have faith in The Lord then you are admonished by the proverb to trust in Him. It’s one thing to believe in Jesus but do you trust in Him?

Do you trust that He will do what the scriptures says He will do such as extending His mercy to you or bless you and comfort you etc.?  I think most of us would say yes to that question. But do we feel in our heart that so long as we lean not to our own understanding and acknowledge Him, He will direct our paths?

If we trust in Him to do as the Proverb says then do we rely on our own understanding or do we expect the blessing to come as we see fit?  We have desires that we would like fulfilled and many of them righteous desires but Jesus knows what’s best for us and their could be many righteous answers to prayers. Do we trust that The Lord will give us what’s best for us regardless of what we think? If we trust that The Lord will bless us according to His wisdom then He will direct our paths.

So from what I see in this passage of scripture I  say that first we have faith in The Lord. Then we trust in Him which is a higher level of faith. After that we show gratitude and He will bless us.

Condemnation or Mercy?

stand_in_aweOur Father in Heaven is more anxious to bless us than condemn us. He’s more anxious to forgive us than to cast us away. But this is no excuse to live a life at odds with His commandments. God cannot look upon sin with the least degree of allowance. We have to show God we are trying to obtain His mercy and grace.  we can do this by trying not to sin and repent when we do.  Pray or commune with the Lord and seek Him in your everyday life.

Equality In Gods Eyes

EQUALITY

There is no place in this world for sexism, racism or bigotry. No one is better than anyone else in Gods eyes. He loves us all the same. He may not care for our actions and He doesn’t like our sins but He loves each one of us just the same.

Prejudice should have no place in our hearts or actions. Equality is what we should all be concerned about. I don’t mean we are all equal from the stand point of talent or intelligence. How many Albert Einstein’s are there? How many Martin Luther Kings are there? But in Gods eyes we are all loved equally.

We should have the equality that we can all advance according to our talents and abilities and not be held back because of the color of our skins or our appearance or disabilities or anything that makes us look different.

Are we so afraid of our own limitations that we feel that suppressing others gives us a boost up?

Getting rid of being prejudiced and promoting equality is healthy for everyone. We can all benefit by equality. We all can be hurt by being prejudice. Would you want to be the subject of prejudice.

Define Your Reality

The past defines the reality of who you were. The present defines the reality of who you are. The future is the reality that you have control over. Define your reality by defining your future. Wait upon the Lord and you can be transformed.

Planters of Seed

A teacher is like a farmer. They both plants seeds and hope they grow. The difference is that a teacher plants her seed into fertile soil of the mind. When that seed grows and matures it plants seed into other fertile minds. When a farmer’s seed grows and matures some of the harvest is held back to plant again the next season. And so it goes. Plant that it may grow. (Callahan)
